The short answer: yes, dachshunds can bite. Any dog can. But having owned four dachshunds over the years, I’ve learned that temperament varies a lot from dog to dog, even within the same breed.
Every Doxie Is Different
Zoey is genuinely one of the friendliest dogs I’ve ever had. She’s curious and social, and I’ve never worried about her snapping at anyone. Still, I’m careful whenever she meets new people. No matter how gentle a dog is, not everyone knows how to approach one, and even the most patient dog has a threshold.

The American Veterinary Medical Association sponsors National Dog Bite Prevention Week each year to educate both dog owners and the public. A few habits that have served me well across all four of my dachshunds:
- Introduce carefully. Let the dog sniff first before anyone reaches out to pet.
- Keep them leashed in public. Even a friendly dog can react unexpectedly to an unfamiliar situation.
- Know your dog’s limits. Odie taught me that respecting a dog’s signals prevents problems before they start.
