Do dachshunds shed? The honest answer is yes — all of them do, but the experience is very different depending on whether you have a short-haired or long-haired dachshund.

Long-Haired Dachshunds Shed the Most

Chloe and Molly were both long-haired dachshunds, and they were absolutely stunning when freshly groomed. Silky, flowing coats that turned heads everywhere we went. But between grooming sessions, the shedding was constant — and worse, the long hair would tangle into knots that were difficult to brush out and uncomfortable for them. Getting a brush through a matted long-haired dachshund is no fun for anyone involved.

Regular grooming is essential with long-haired dachshunds. Brushing a few times a week keeps the mats from forming and makes the eventual bath much easier. Bathing and grooming also reduces visible shedding — a lot of the loose fur goes down the drain or ends up on the brush rather than on your furniture.

Short-Haired Dachshunds Are Easier to Manage

Zoey is a short-haired dachshund, and while she definitely still sheds, it’s a completely different situation. Her coat is short and fine, so a quick wipe-down handles most of the loose hair. She doesn’t mat, and keeping her clean is simple.

The one thing that really helps: her blanket. Zoey spends a lot of time on her blanket, and it catches the bulk of the hair she sheds. We wash it every week, and that alone keeps the hair off the furniture and off us.

A Few Things That Help

Regardless of coat type, a few habits make a real difference with dachshund shedding:

• Brush regularly — even short-haired dachshunds benefit from a weekly brushing to remove loose fur before it ends up on your couch
• Bathe monthly — loose fur washes away, and clean coats shed less visibly
• Dedicate a blanket — let your dog claim one blanket and wash it weekly; it’s a surprisingly effective way to contain the hair

Dachshunds do shed, but with the right routine it’s very manageable — especially with a short-haired dog like Zoey.
